Tonight

In My Laughing Buddha on March 27, 2007 at 11:07 pm

Tonight is calm and sober

Light penetrates dark as if weary

My desk is cluttered, keys to keep out cold

Sunglasses to dim the silences

Alarm clock to wake an insomniac

A lamp turned down in shame

Scraps and coins, scraps and coins

My hands typing,

Certainly somewhere

Someone has just

Witnessed a miracle

Certainly somewhere

Someone has just typed a perfect poem

thrown it away because it wasn’t enough.

In the summer when it is too warm to be lonely

My desk is clear; night is calm and sober,

I sleep long.
